My wife and I both have the Samsung A900M phones and are very disappointed in their performance. Both phones repeatedly lose Bluetooth connection to our earpiece and have unclear reception when the phone is more than 2 feet from the earpiece. Both phones periodically lose all battery life within 4 hours of a full charge. The phones also reboot and freeze (requiring battery removal to reset) due to Bluetooth earpiece connection or disconnection. Missed alerts create makes it operate slow and inconsistently. Today, my phone started mysteriously heating up which caused me to remove the batter for fear that it might blow up.
Repeated visits to the Sprint service stores yield only phone replacements with another phone that has the same problems and that is after waiting 30 minutes or more to see a service tech. I even showed them video of these malfunctions. Having the Sprint service plan does not help when they keep giving you the same bad phone.
This is simply the best phone i've ever owned. It has a very durable construction, i've dropped it down a set of stairs onto concrete and only got a few small scratches on it. Unlike the Motorola RAZR V3 I had which fell out of my jacket pocket and cracked the top half wide open. The camera is 1.3MP vs. the average 0.3MP of most phones, although the pic quality isn't astounding. Then again its a camera phone, I use my 8.1MP Sony Cybershot when I want the pics to come out nice. It came with the USB Cable which is nice considering Sprint charges $20-$40 for most other phone cables. The only downside is the battery life. If you use the Power Vision service a lot or use the media player, headset or bluetooth it kills the battery quick. However for normal calls and texting the battery should last you all day. If you need longer battery life then simply buy an extended battery w/door cover here on Amazon for around $20, dont buy the one Sprint sells for $60. The generic one's from BargainCell work just as good for a fraction of the price. I bought one and it was well worth it, I can surf the web and listen to MP3's and still charge it every other day. The bigger battery honestly doesnt add much bulk at all and in fact gives the phone a nice "grip" to hold onto while talking or texting.
The 4 biggest pro's for me:
1. Durable as hell.
2. Great reception, even though it has an internal antennae.
3. Feature packed , media player (music and video), bluetooth, A-GPS, Power Vision and runs on CLDC 1.1 / MIDP 2.0. (meaning it runs the latest java software that older phones can't).
4. Large bright vibrant screen. 320x240 pixels
Cons:
1. Short battery life if you are a heavy user. (Fixed with a $20 extended battery)
2. Interface and menu's can be slow at times.
3. Low memory (only 47mb useable for Mass Storage, about 10MB for ringers and Applications)
4. No removable memory slot.
I give it 4 out of 5 simply for lack of removable memory.
I'd recommend this phone over the RAZR and Katana!
we picked up 2. our prior phones were an older treo & another samsung flip type phone. we both loved our phone at first -- but after about 6 months of use, we more or less hate it.
pros:
- small & elegant
- nice array of features
- voice dialing works very well
cons:
- battery life is short -- although it is relative to battery and phone size
- 1 of the 2 phones is malfunctioning -- screen on the cover freezes up, which accelerates battery drain (life is about 5 hrs because of this).
- memory is a joke -- capacity is easily reached within a month if you regularly use the calendar scheduler. in its defense, i probably should be diligent about removing old appointments each week (i'm spoiled from the treo). if you use voice recording or the camera, you'll fill your phones memory within a couple weeks. even if you aren't at full capacity, there is incredible slowing of phone functions as your memory fills up.
- couldn't get the bluetooth to work consistently on either phones -- whether with earpieces, other phones, or my computer.
bottomline -- overpriced by far! if you simply want a small flip phone -- look elsewhere as the extra bells & whistles are mediocre. if you need a phone for handling a fair amounts of scheduling, get a treo or similar product. in hindsight, we'd pass on the phones -- or if i had to buy it, i'd spend $50 max.
I purchased this phone 3 days ago. The phone is a great phone. The only problem it has is the battery runs out to quickly. I was looking for an extended battery and all were to big for the phone. Making the phone to thick. Ill just buy a regular extra battery instead.
I was skeptical about purchasing this phone because of its internal antennna. The reception on this phone was great. I am upgrading after about a year and a half of using this to a Palm Treo 700p. I will keep this phone just in case something happens to the treo. This phone has a durable metal case that feels like a $300.00 phone should. Yes I actually paid $300.00 for this not the superlow prices advertised now. There were very minor reasons for me not giving it 5 stars. 1)The interface to get through your contacts is slow. 2) Fact that you can't use Sprint Music files for ring tones after you paid $2.50 per song RIP OFF! 3) I am a heavy user and the battery life of this phone has never impressed me. I spent alot of time charging this in the car after a full charge the night before. At current prices this phone is a STEAL!!!
This phone is great for you if:
1) You're not a heavy phone user. I personally fall somewhere in the middle. I spend most of my time making brief phone calls, but I'll have the occasional 1.5 hour chat. I average about 30-45 minutes a day talking on the phone and then a couple hours of just dawdling around with the phone's extra features. With that said, I have to recharge my phone every other day. Once unplugged the phone is almost never fully charged, but it still keeps on going even though it looks like it's running low.
2) Quality interface is important to you. I had a hard time walking away from my LG VX8000 because no other phone seemed to come close to matching the VX8000's large screen and text clarity. Not even the LG Fusic or Sanyo Katana came close. But I LOVE the A900M's interface. It's amazingly bright and colorful, like your own mini computer.
3) You enjoy taking pictures with your phone. The camera and camcorder quality is pretty darn nice compared to other phones. You aren't limited to how long your videos are other than the phone's internal memory.
4) You're not a fan of flimsy plastic phones. The A900M feels very solid in your hands because of the metal casing and the weight. It doesn't feel cheaply made.
The only minor gripes I have about the phone are:
1) There are menu buttons everywhere that make it easy for you to hop online, but it takes several buttons to get to the actual things you want to use on the phone like text messaging, camera, etc.
2) The menu itself isn't perfect. Sometimes I'll get myself somewhere that doesn't let me use a back button, so I have to exit and start all over to get to that same point again.
3) If you start to type a name in your contact list, it takes a few seconds for the phone to go down to that name.
4) Text messaging is a little awkward. After you type in a letter, it takes just a second or two for that letter to become fixed into your message. Hitting the space key fixes the letter if it's not done blinking instead of putting a space after the letter. I'm a heavy SMS user and like to do speed typing on my phone, but because of my usual speed, I have to hit the space key twice in between words just to get a space.
5) You can't read text messages or view alerts on the outer LCD. I think this is the only thing I'll miss the most about the LG VX8000.
6) You're rather limited by how you can customize the phone display, such as font, menu color, outer LCD, etc.
Other than that, this is a great phone that I'm happy with since it fits my non high-tech needs. I would give it 4.5 stars but I'm rounding up.
The phone is amazing. I read the other reviews and i dont know about that guy that gave it a 1 rating, he must have some bad luck. my bluetooth works just fine with it from anywhere less than 2 rooms away. Also I have no gripe about the car charger and the placement of the charger on the phone, in fact I had never even thought of it till i read his comment.
There are only 2 things that annoy me from time to time.
1.) The menu interface is sooooo slow. when you go to your contact list and type in a letter, say K for example, it takes almost a full 7 seconds for it to go down to K. I dont understand why, it makes no sense. I have another phone that still works from 8 years ago and it instantly jumps to the letter you input. that is seriously annoying.
2.) the camera is just OK. maybe thats just me, because I am a photographer and of course i prefer to take pictures with my digital camera, but its too often the pictures on the phone come out overly red in color, way too dark, or blurry. but like i said, maybe i expect too much.
I will say that the swivel feature of the camera is awesome, i love it.
My biggest gripe though, is that after a year of perfect use out of my phone, i spilled a margarita on myself at work, and a good deal of it went into my pocket. now my phone wont work. come on, when will phone companies finally start making our phones margarita, shock, and overly-drunk-throw-it-against-the-wall-out-of-rage proof? seriously, is that so much to ask for?
And that is why it gets a 4, and not a 5. pfff
I wouldn't normally write a review, but everyone is giving this phone a bad rap.. I think people that buy into those reviews are getting cheated out of an excellent phone. I've know several people with Razors that ALL like this much much better. The battery life is absolutely fine, and my phone is on vibrate all day. Maybe other reviewers are on the phone constantly on full blast playing mp3s and shooting video.. I don't get it. I've had this phone the better part of a year and never ran out of charge during the day. I plug it in at night. I work as an architect and am on the phone all day long and beat the living hell out of it.. which is another huge plus about this phone. It has a *sturdy* metal housing.. not thin toy crap a la razors or plastic like most phones. I don't do a lot of bluetooth, computer syncing, etc, just use the phone in a fairly conventional way, with regular camera use, and for that it is *easily* far and away the best phone I've ever owned.
I gave it 1 Star for the design, which I did like.
Cons:
1) What battery life....THERE ISN'T ANY...!!!!!
2) Blue Tooth...WHERE IS IT..????!!!! I have purchased the Jabra BT500 device for this and it does not work properly. It pairs easily but then loses connection with the phone constantly. So its back to the Wired Headset.
3) The charger is positioned on the left side of the phone. I seriously believe that the folks at Samsung have never driven a car because if the did they would know that you cannot use the phone while its plugged into the car charger. Placing the charger at the bottom of the phone would have been better.
4) No Tech Support at Samsung. Well there are some people that answer the Tech line and call themselves Tech Support but.....
5) This phone should be placed in a museum under the heading "Great Idea, Very Poor Implementation".
6) Doesn't even work as a paper weight.!!!!
7) Samsung should stick to making televisions and leave the mobile phone business to people who know what they are doing.
8) -1 Star to Sprint for selling such a bad excuse for a mobile phone to its unsuspecting customers.
9) *sigh*
************** UPDATE: THIS PHONE HAS SEVERE PROBLEMS ***************
After one month of using it, I now found it be turned off automatically every time I close the cover. It also does so while I tried to set up an alarm. Holy *, I will have to talk to Sprint to probably get a new one, but even so would I have to copy all my 200 contacts one by one AGAIN? Screw Samsung.

1, you can not synchronize the phonebook with your PC in a convenient way. I had to code a program to generate single vcard files and send them over bluetooth ONE BY ONE. There seems to be no way to do it without bluetooth.
2, you can not apply mp3 files as ringtones. However you can download mp3/aac ringtones from sprint (for a fee). Oh the original ringtones that came with the phone? They are just awful.
3, constantly turning its screens off - I know this is a power-saving method and there are ways to get around, but it just sounds very stupid to me.
4, The connector covers are fragile and of poor design - when plugged, the cell phone just can't lie flat.
5, photo quality is so so - but I don't care.
6, AWFUL battery life. I have to recharge it every day (I spent 30-40 minutes on the phone per day). UPDATE: it's getting even worse after a fair use of 3 months... Shame on you SAMSUNG.
It is a nice phone. Have no reception problems. Bluetooth works fine. It does not come with software but you can download from samsung web site. They do not have software for this model but download for a940 and it works. My pc sees as storage device and all you have to do drag and drop. Unfortunately memory is to little 47M and no sd slot. battery life is horrible worst than any phone I had. Media player is great mp3 and video no problem. No phone book support but I am still working on it trying different softwares to see if it works. but if your old phone has bluetooth, you can pair them up and send the phone book via v card to your new one, has to be one by one but better than key in. UPDATE: BEAWERE OF SPRINT CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY ARE BUNCH OF LIARS THEY TOLD ME OVER THE PHONE THIS WAS FREE WITH THE SERVICE. I BELIEVED THEM UNTIL I HAVE GOT MY BILL. THEY CHARGE ME $70 EXTRA. I HAVE RETURNED THE PHONE. WATCH OUT
I've had this phone for about two and a half weeks, and it's wonderful. The sound system is excellent when i play my songs. Reception could be a little better, but otherwise it's great. It's nice and slim and easy to flip open. The only cons i would say about the Samsung MM A900M Ace Phone is that putting music into it from the USB port from your computer is difficult; so far i only have 1 song. The phone's great so far. With an adjustable camera I can take pictures of myself or someone else, and you can take pictures without even opening the phone.
Yes I charge my phone every night, but I have no problem with it making through the day with calls, texting and light web browsing.
Easy to synch to PC with included USB cable, but best to buy a USB charging data cable to keep it charging while you synch.
Bluetooth functionality is incredible.
The display is the best I have seen in a portable device. It is brighter than my DS Lite with vibrant colors.
Sure, I wish the battery lasted longer (but then we wouldn't have this gorgeous display). I also wish the phone had a memory slot.
For the price/performance, a tough phone to beat. Looks sharper than a razr and much more manly than a fusic.
I am going to be buying a high quality (not OEM) battery for swappage. If that adds an hour to life, this phone will be perfect!
This is an OK phone. It has "stereo" speakers, but no speaker phone.
There is no software to manage the phone from your computer, although there's a USB port for using the phone as a modem. So, hope you're into the painful process of entering names and numbers by finger.
It apparently has some qualities as an iPod, but who cares if you have to go to Sprint's online music store to download what you probably already have on your iPod (all for additional online charges, I would assume).
Until phones get to the point where they're as good as the separate components they're trying to replace (iPod, digital camera, PDA, etc.) I wouldn't waste my time with this thing.
Great phone but the HUGE downside is that the battery life is absolutely pitiful... Only buy this phone if you plan on talking on it while its being plugged in 24/7. Honestly, it wont even last a full day being on with a few text messages and 5 minute conversations here and there. what a joke. I love the phone, when it's actually on!
This phone is sleek and has nice features. While the Sprint store was able to print my phone book from my old Verizon samsung phone, they could not download my phonebook into the new phone. It has also been a hassle getting it to work as a cell phone modem. With my samsung Verizon phone I just bought the cable and CD and it worked (although Verizon told me it wouldn't). This phone handles pictures nicely, but I would much prefer it handle my address book nicely and my internet conenction needs. I was able to transfer files using bluetooth, but just pictures, not vcards.
