Review: I just wanted a phone I could put music on from my computer
by: J. Rhodes on date: June 12, 2007
Everything I wanted to say deals with the phones ability to play music. When I was looking for reviews I found it hard to find one that specifically said if you could put music on your phone from music files your computer. You can, but they have to be in .wma format. It won't play mp3's, which isn't that big of a deal. Also, it will say that you need to buy the USB adaptor stuff, which if you have a SD slot on your computer there is no need. All you have to do is put your microSD in your phone and try and play music. It will put the necessary folders on your microSD, at which point you put it in your SD adaptor and slide it into your SD slot on your computer and put the music files in the appropriate folders, by manually dragging and dropping.

Review: suckest phone
by: Suh F. Ng on date: June 12, 2007
I have the first one which key pad can not reconize when I dial the number, the 2nd replacement ever worse, the battery go off in 1 day, I called Amazon cell phone dept to get a new phone and this time they refused to replace due to already past the 30 days, now I am stuck in 2 year contract and need to buy a new phone with retail price. Verizon also is one of the suck cell phone provider due to they don;t have GSM card, so each time, when you change the new phone, you need to reactive the phone and it is not convenience if you go oversea

Review: good, not great
by: Kjh on date: May 28, 2007
Just got the phone. I like the size, the sounds are good. It's a good phone. Not a great one.
Strengths: decent sound on the music player and the speaker.
Lots of features -- bluetooth, speaker phone, music player, camera, etc.
Display on the outside of the phone (when closed) is nice.

Weaknesses: There are MANY, but they're all somewhat small.
-- MP3 player: the phone DOES NOT play mp3's, it plays WMAs. Maybe doesn't sound like a big deal, but some mp3's don't convert cleanly. I have many tracks that just stop playing 1/2 way through or won't convert at all. Annoying
-- MP3 player: all files must be stored in the same directory, and playlists are used to manage them. OK, in theory, but the playlist management is junk. It's 200 key strokes to get anything in there, and you can't copy playlists from you PC. (well, i can't do it). the only way to get music across is to use Windows Media player and "synch", but the playlists themselves don't seem to synch -- just the songs. So setting up is paaaaaaaiiiiinnful.
-- camera: the camera is ok. The swivel lens is kinda cool. But, while the video recorder can zoom, the camera can't -- go figure.
-- buttons: are right on the side of the phone where you can easily get to them, and where you easily hit them by mistake everytime you touch the phone.

I'm still 50/50 about whether to keep it. The price is good for what you get, and i like the size. But the features are just flukey. I htink i'm going to stick with it, and just whine about it.
But be careful. If you're looking for a small, usable, phone with a lot of features, this is good. If you're looking to use any of the features in any depth, you will probably be disappointed. It's the jack-of-all/master-of-none phone. Sad, cuz it could so easily be so much more.

Review: Not in stock at all
by: cs grad student on date: May 22, 2007
I got this phone for free through verizon wireless online with 2-year extension. I had two but one of them went blackout sometimes while answering. It did not even display it was turning off. It was clearly defected though hard to prove since it worked fine most of the time. So I wanted to exchange with the new one. When I call the customer center, they said that I needed to exchange it in store. However, none of the verizon stores had it in stock. After a few more interactions with the customer service & local stores, I could finally order the new one from the warehouse through customer service center. It was very time consuming and I had been annoyed but I was little bit relaxed at the moment. Today, I got another call from customer service that they do not have it in stock. The service representative was also surprised at their not having it in stock though it said in stock even on their computer. Finally, I had to order the other model(LG vx8300) with over-night shipping which costed me $12.99. since I needed to get it soon before 30 day exchange period. It is a big risk buying this phone since they don't have it in stock in case you need to exchange.

My overall experience with this phone is not very good when even not considering no stock annoying. It is amazing that it has a camera/video though it's free with 2-year agreement. But it has poorer talk sensitivity in the same place than LG VX3300 that I used to use. Also, one of two that I received was defected. Further, since no stores have the model in stock, manufacturer warranty is useless. I won't be able to exchange even with refurbished one. Therefore, I would say my experience with this phone was the worst among all the five phones that I experienced since 1998.

Review: Excellent little phone!
by: Mousebaby on date: May 22, 2007
I got this phone mainly for the bluetooth feature it has. I have a car that has a U-connect system in it and I wanted one that would work with it. This phone is perfect for a busy mom! It holds a charge for a good long time and I hardly ever miss calls due to not hearing it ring. It's plenty loud enough for a busy store. The camera takes excellent pictures for such a tiny little thing. I just can't say enough about this phone, and Verizon just ROCKS anyway!!

Review: Not as good as it appears to be !
by: C. Torre on date: April 12, 2007
I saw the SCH A-930 wile in a verizon store lookin for new phone. At 1st this seemed like the perfect phone. I was told by the sales people it can play mp3's . That was the 1st problem i noticed wen i got home with it. It Does Not play mp3's. so i thought no big deal ill just convert to wma. problem 2 was ringtones . i was also told i can create my own ringtone an use my music or sounds as a ringtone . Once again untrue. a mp3 or wma will not work as a ringtone. i wasted $2.00 tryin to send tones to myself before i realized i had to change the .mp3 to .mid then email to my phone an add it to my sounds . I find this to be annoyin to do everytime i want a ringtone. So i thought was the end of the problems. weeks later i started to get new voicemail messages instead of a call . it seems lots of calls dont go through for some reason an you end up just getin a voicemail message. Then i go an get a micro sd card so i can add music. The file transfers went perfect the sound an music controls on the phone were good. i thought everyhting was goin perfect . then the lock for the sd card comes out an the card begins to pop out. as long as the phone is in a case i dont got to worry about losing the sd card but im afraid to take the phone out of the case cause i might lose the sd card . My brother has this phone too an has the same problem with the sd card not locking in place so its not just my phone. Im sorry i ever got this phone.

Review: Great no-nonsense phone
by: M. Tak on date: April 7, 2007
i purchased this phone in october 2006 for $50 through verizon and love it. i upgraded from a free LG phone b/c i wanted more features. i don't like big phones and the size of the a930 works for me. the phone is sleak in design and isn't heavy. i love the outside blue display. it's like an alarm clock display, you don't have to press any buttons to see the time. my average daily usage: talk time=2 hours , send & receive text/pic messages=10-15, games=1 hour. i charge my phone every 2 days with battery to spare.

pros: price, produces good photos, crisp & clear display, speakerphone works well

cons: only one direction of the navigation pad can be designated as a short-cut.

Review: It isn't a home entertainment center.
by: Coronet Blue on date: March 4, 2007
I got the SCH-a930 about a week ago and its fine. But let me explain. I believe a phone should have 3 functions. (1) It should allow you to make calls, (2) It should allow you to receive calls and (3) you should be able to hear the caller and they should be able to hear you.

Everything else--everything, is nonsense. Not enough ring tones. The 1.3 megapixel camera falls short of Ansel Adams. The keyboard is smaller than a 17" laptop. Of course it would be nice to have a tiny phone with iPod capability, a 10 megapixel camera and the sound quality of a hard wired phone. But it isn't possible so why try? Sadly, we have reached a point where cell phone manufacturers feel compelled to add more features, even if they don't work well. To add insult to injury, many of these enhancements require an extra fee. OK, Bluetooth might be worth having if it keeps you from plowing your BMW into a crowd of people. I'm not crazy about those flashing Robocop headsets, though. How ridiculous.

I read a lot of reviews before getting this phone and I realized it was impossible to get the one piece of information I needed: how's the reception? Judging by the reviews this is dependent on where you are. So perhaps the SCH-a930 is great in Phoenix and unusable in Dallas. But until cellular technology is perfected (if ever) the only way you'll know is by trying. Of course people move around but, having stood next to people in airports who were constantly dropping calls, I'm convinced that what matters most is the carrier and not the phone. This might explain why some people adore the Razr and others get hostile, just discussing them.

Since people insist on using cell phones as .mp3 players and TVs, no point in reading their comments on battery life, either. The only thing I can compare this phone to is my 10-year old StarTac (which still works perfectly but was getting too many laughs at work). If you're familiar with the StarTac it was a small, inconspicuous, folding phone with good sound, excellent battery life and an antenna that could be extended if the signal was weak. So how does the SCH-a930 compare? It looks about the same, sounds almost as good, has a much bigger screen (sadly, not visible in direct sun) and correspondingly shorter battery life. Its built to be replaced in a year or two. In other words, its not a big improvement over a good, older phone but on the other hand, it isn't a whole lot worse and these days, that's quite an accomplishment. Bravo!

One thing to check if you can. The speaker button on this phone is in an unfortunate location. Depending on how you hold the phone (and how tightly) you may find yourself turning on the speaker. I didn't have a problem with this, nor do I have any use for a speaker. However, I think a P.A. system with Dolby surround sound would be cool. Now, if Apple would credit my account $10 each time the iPhone dropped a call, I'd say that was a real breakthrough in cell technology.

Review: Crappiest phone I've ever owned.
by: Openearja on date: February 25, 2007
I bought the Samsung SCH-A930 on the recommendation of a friend who told me it had the highest ratings in Consumer Report. I had originally purchased the Nokia 6215, but wanted a phone with advanced speech recognition voice dialling, so exchanged it for the Samsung, a decision I sorely regret. The phone has a number of media features but requires the purchase of additional accessories in order to take advantage of them. It comes with limited ringtones, and though one may download additional ringtones through GetItNow, these require a monthly subscription.

Apart from these fancy features, how does the a930 function as a regular phone? Like others who have posted here, I have experienced poorer reception at home than I did with my old Motorola or the Nokia. Many times, I receive voicemail notification from calls that the phone did not pick up. That never happened with the other phones. My friends complain that my voice does not come through clearly, and there is often crackling, something I had not experienced with my Motorola or the Nokia. The speakerphone button is in a ridiculous position, and is inevitably accidentally activated while speaking on the phone. Missed calls and voicemail alerts show up only momentarily on the external screen, and the clock is suspended when the phone is not receiving a signal--a total inconvenience to me when I am on the subway.

The calendar on this phone is ridiculous. (Whenever I enter a recurrent event, it only shows up on the events list for the first day, although the reminder alarm goes off on the recurring days. So if I check my calendar to make an appointment, a day might show up as completely free, when there are appointments entered for that date! And don't tell me I should purchase a PDA--I can't afford one,and I expect all the phone's functions to work as stated.)

I so regret not keeping the Nokia 6215, or getting another Motorola. I hope to sell this Samsung phone as soon as I can, and replace it.

Review: Solid phone for the money
by: kwill10 on date: February 25, 2007
I chose this phone with our new 2-year contract renewal because it was the highest rated Verizon phone from Consumer Reports. I was interested in Bluetooth, and while I wasn't sure I really needed to play music, that was an extra "perk". Overall, I have been satisfied with the phone; I'm not a heavy phone user, but it has everything I need.

I use a Jabra BT150 headset, and the Bluetooth works well with that. I have heard (but haven't confirmed) that some of the other Bluetooth features have been disabled by Verizon, and I can vouch for the fact that they push the VCAST features pretty heavily (all of which cost more than I think they're worth). I purchased a 1 GB micro SD card to fit into the phone and a USB adapter for the SD card so that we could transfer files from the computer to the SD card. This is useful because you can use the card to transfer pictures and songs to and from your phone (w/o paying Verizon for this "privilege"). MP3 files can be converted to WMA files on a PC via a free add-on to Windows Media Player (available from Windows), so with a bit of effort you can transfer music onto your phone without having to buy the "Music Essentials Kit".

Some have complained that the speakerphone button is easy to hit accidentally. I personally have never done that, though it is on the side of the phone and if you hold the phone a certain way I could see how that would happen. You might visit a Verizon store to actually hold one before you buy.

Overall, I think this is a solid phone for routine use. The camera, music player, Bluetooth, etc. aren't top-of-the-line technology, but comparing prices, I felt this phone was a bargain for the price.

Review: Can you read me now...
by: Erol Esen on date: February 23, 2007
I wanted to get a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and all those bells and whistles, which I wouldn't use but it looked cool. The truthiness of the necessity of buying such a phone got demolished by the price tag and I had to resort to something else that merely, yet completely, satisfied all of my needs. I settled on this phone: Samsung A930.

It is not without its disappointments, which mainly reside beyond the everything-you-need realm. Any criticism I have revolves around the Bluetooth technology. It would have been nice to hook up the phone to my computer via Bluetooth, however, the Verizon system with Samsung seem adamant to not allow this. USB cable, which you can buy from Verizon for $30 extra, however, works great and works great with a freeware software called BitPim, simply Google it and download the setup. This tool downloads/uploads everything from/to your phone: pictures, contacts, etc. I am also disappointed with most Bluetooth headphones. The ultimate test is with headphones inside a car while driving.

Samsung A930 has a lot of community support. The most impressive web site I found is (www DOT howardforums DOT com/archive/topic/975000-1 DOT html). The discussion thread talks about secret menus, etc. Also more useful topics about Bluetooth, voice memo, camera usage among other things.

The camera, by the way, aside from taking snapshots and video stream, has a flash for taking better pictures.

Because of this camera's versatility and price, I bought another one for my wife. Having the same camera in the family has the added benefit of sharing the same charger, headphones, battery, USB cable, and memory cards.

I have been testing this phone for three days now and I haven't had to recharge it during this time.

Best regards.

Review: Customer service disaster
by: ChefJeff on date: February 17, 2007
DO NOT buy this unless you're willing to endure continuous calls from Verizon Wireless if you try to close your account.

Last week, shortly after telling Verizon's sales person I was switching to T-Mobile because their Customer Service is a disaster, I began getting three to five calls each day that hang up as soon as I answer. Doing a *69 revealed they were coming from 1-800-470-0768, Verizon Wireless' number. Calling a supervisor (Jasen) resulted in an apology and him putting me on their Do Not Call list, which he says won't take effect for 30 days. He also said this is a "known problem with Verizon's auto-dialer" for which Verizon has no solution. It's only noon and so far today I've gotten three calls from them, two hangups and another sales pitch to upgrade my phones and stay with Verizon Wireless.

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes.

Review: Amazing phone, severally hindered by verizon
by: Seth on date: February 10, 2007
The a930 is a pretty solid phone, you can drop it, it won't break.
The goods: It won't break easily, good sound, great camera that rotates!! with pictures and video capabilities, and a bunch of expected stuff like ringtones, shortcuts, color lcd, plays .wma's, speaker phone, etc. Its loud and soft, crystal clear sound. DUN, bluetooth, microSD expansion slot. And Vcast.

In other words, if you're looking for a good phone-- this is it.

Now verizon has this sick idea of selling you stuff...that doesn't work.

Bluetooth--forget it, I've tried connecting with every single service, and even the same phone, it won't work. Why? Verizon blocks it.
Mp3- this phone can play mp3s, it can even play .wav's. What happened? the mp3 playback is in a hidden menu (search forums) and the .wav has to be disguised as a midi file.

Its a wonderful phone. If you want bluetooth, DO NOT USE VERIZON. Don't buy an accessories from them either, use amazon to find something good. eBay works well too.

Review: Good phone
by: Sang Jin Park on date: January 28, 2007
This is a very nice looking cell phone. It looks very good, and it's not too heavy considering it is feature packed. It also takes very good pictures. Verizon should ship some of the vital accessories, such as a USB cable. No problem though, I'll be buying them once my rebate comes in.
Overall, this is a very good buy. The sound quality (while talking on the phone) is really not bad, although there is a slight distortion. But this is really minor because I don't plan on listening to opera through the phone.
I recommend this phone.

Review: Need Help With This Phone??
by: J. Mora on date: January 21, 2007
This phone is great! I've had it for a month now an have found some really neat tricks with this phone.

First off it is not an MP3 phone!! It only plays WMA music files. BUT! no worries its really easy to convert your MP3 music files into WMA (using "Plus! MP3 Audio Converter LE") & they sound completely the same. Going to www.microsoft.com download center you can download this software fast, easy an most importantly FREE. ok. The next thing I learned was that I could make my very own RINGTONES on my phone. Yup. That's right, I can grab any MP3 song slice a small clip (using "MP3 Cutter Joiner version 1.17") that I want from it an transfer it to my phone (using SD transFlash Card) and use it as a ringtone.

So check it out. With a little patience an learning a thing or to about audio files this phone can offer you Free Music, Ringtones & Pictures. All from your computer. Remember though!! I use a microSD/TransFlash Card to transfer all these files to my phone. So if u want to take full advantage of this phone your going to need one. 256mb is the one I use.

The Reception is great. So Far no dropped calls. I'm also a big texter ,seriously I txt all day everyday about 6,000 a month, well after txting all day the battery does tend to get low. Especially after a couple phone calls. But it has never died on me. I also play music all day and yet has never died. So in the end the battery is good.

Now If you read some of the other reviews somewhere someone wrote that since it has no front display you cant tell if u got a txt message, phone call or missed call etc. That is somewhat true. After 2 min it disappears but if you press the speaker button (or any other button on the outside) for 1 sec it pops back up again for another 2 min letting you know you have received something. And if you haven't it simply displays the date. ALSO!! the front display on this phone NEVER turns off. it always displays reception, time (not the date), and battery life.

so to sum it all up..

Good:
Reception
Battery Life
Add your own music and ringtones
Has Dust Covers
Rotating Camera

Bad:
Speakers could be a wee bit louder
& Verizon should hand out free accessories for this phone.
I know Sprint does with all of its Samsung phones.

Feel Free to email me at Hernizzzle510@sbcgloabl.net an I'll gladly help anyone needing help wit this phone in any way I can .

Review: I LOVE THIS PHONE. AWESOME PHONE.
by: Richard C. Johnson on date: January 12, 2007
March 25, 2007 - Please see my previous review below. I can't find fault with this phone. I have been trying to justify buying another newer Samsung or LG not Motorola. I have had them, my wife has the Moto Razr and my son has the K1m all of which are okay, but frankly the Samsung A930 is better than any of those. I can't justify getting rid of this phone because it is AWESOME. The speaker phone is the best I have ever had and my wife wants to know if I can turn it down. The ear piece volume is awesome she wants that turned down too. I play Texas Hold'em every day at lunch on this phone for about 1 hour and never have run out of power. I have never dropped a call, lost a call, etc. I have never not had reception. I couldn't write a bad review on this phone if I tried to. Please see below:

"I bought this phone the first week it came out and I love it. You can pretty much count on Samsung for a quality product, unlike the over-rated Motorola. My wife has the Moto V3M, it is nice size but lacks quality and performance. I love the looks of the A930, very sexy, sets apart from all the other look a likes.

I have had lots of cell phones in the last 15 plus years. This is my favorite. Good volume and very simple to use the speaker phone. I am a big user of speaker phones on cell phones. When I use it the party on the other end of the phone never knows I am on the speaker.

I am also very suspicious when I see a single star review among other considerably higher reviews. Like there is an agenda. Can all of the rest of the reviews be that far off?

You owe it to yourself to take a look at this phone and find out for yourself.

It really depends on what features you really use every day. The rest are just fluff.

Whenever I buy a new cell phone the first thing I do is go on the Internet and find a longer lasting battery. So, I do have an extended life battery. But, I always do.

This phone is well designed and the Menu is one of the easiest I have used to get around my phone. It is extremely easy to disable the EVDO. You only need it for VCast which I rarely use. The Menu is designed to switch back and forth easily whenever you want. By disabling the EVDO, you will immediately get more talk and standby time out of your battery. With other phones like the Moto V3M, to disable the EVDO, you actually need a printed page of instructions.

I really like the exterior display. It is simple and very easy to read even in strong sunlight. The exterior function keys are all well designed and easy to use."

Review: Great phone but it does have a few set backs.
by: A. Garcia on date: December 29, 2006
I bought this phone to replace a 4 year old LG-TM510. Right off the bat let me say that you need to have a Windows XP machine to take advantage of some of the extra features this phone has. This is important to me because I work in IT (Information Technology). Connecting this phone to your computer will allow you to back up your calendar, contacts, & pictures. You can also upload your own wallpaper, ring tones, and music. With the 32MB of built in memory you can upload around 4 songs, 5 wallpapers, and 4 ring tones. This is good for me because I can just swap out the music, wallpaper, and tones every few weeks. I will tell you this; don't buy any of the accessories from Verizon. I found the holster and data cable on EBay for about 40% cheaper.

Now lets move on to the phone itself. The security is crap compared to my LG-TM510. The LG would ask for a four digit pin before every call thus preventing unauthorized use and could be locked by holding the star button. This phone has to be manually locked via the menu screen and is either fully locked or unlocked. It is a bit tricky opening the phone but after I added the holster, I can open it quickly and without pressing any buttons.

The 1.3MP camera takes clearer pictures than some of my friends more expensive phones and it has a digital zoom and brightener. It also has a 15 second camcorder for recording "flix". The speaker has about eight settings that range from "Vibrate only" to "High" which has scared my wife a few times. There is a programmable "shortcut" key that allows you to create a shortcut to a commonly used feature. However there is only ONE shortcut key. The caller ID only displays names in your contacts when you enter the area code along with the phone number but you can link a picture to each contact.

It is very light weight and does not heat up on long calls like the LG-TM510. I love the sleek black flat and polished finish combination and the sliver buttons just add to that. Overall, I am happy with my new phone and only give it 3 stars because of the some of the marketing driven features and the really bad OEM ringtones. I must say if you purchase this phone, DO NOT buy any of the accessories from Verizon. [...]

Gorgeous sleek and packed with features! -

I only went into the store wanting a phone with a camera. When I saw the Samsung A930 I fell in love.

The fact that the top screen is on ALL the time is great. When I'm searching in the dark, or in the dark recesses of my purse, there's the phone. Very easy to find.

The battery it comes with is 1000mah. You can get an extended life battery for about $40 bucks.

I get great reception.

I tested all the phones in the shop, and most of them were pretty complicated when it came to figuring out how to take a picture. This was the only one that was actually point and shoot. Nothing to figure out. That sold it for me right there...

The ringtone selection is abysmal, and that's because they want you to purchase more ringtones. Makes sense from a marketing standpoint. So, I purchased more ringtones. No big deal, considering I got $100 bucks off the phone from Verizon as my upgrade bonus.

Visual screen = w 1.25" x h 1" Very clear picture.

I have never hit the speaker button by mistake. If you use the right edge of your thumb instead of your whole thumb, you won't run into that problem. However, I am a woman, and I do have small hands.

Keep in mind, that people who feel the need to leave reviews are ones that are unhappy with the product. I'm leaving this review so that you know, not all users feel that way. I assume that most of the happy users are out yapping on their fancy new phone :)

Review: Total junk...
by: Kristopher Cargile on date: October 27, 2006
I bought the Samsung A930 at the recommendation of a Verizon employee when my trusty Motorola finally died. The Samsung is one of the worst consumer electronic products I have ever owned. Here's why:

1) Sound quality is terrible. I exchanged the phone twice in the first week because I thought the equipment was defective, but apparently they all sound bad. Folks constantly tell me that I sound like I am underwater and complain that they can hear me breathing - complaints I never had with other equipment.

2) The battery lasts less than one day with normal usage.

3) The speakerphone button is impossible not to press while holding the phone normally during a call.

4) Out-of-the-box memory is insufficient. Sure you can add an SD card to increase the phone's memory, but without it you can expect to store about thirty text messages before you start getting annoying warning screens.

5) Volume controls are inconsistent. The voicemail alert beep is painfully loud, regardless of how you have the volume settings on the phone adjusted.

6) The protective cover over the battery port makes it nearly impossible to plug a charger in without using both hands. This means that you either have to break the cover off, or be forced to remove your hands from the steering wheel to charge your phone in the car.

7) Usability of the phone's operating system is abhorrent. Simple navigation around the phone is tedious and there are several dead-end navigation paths.

My advice: stay away from the A930. There are several higher quality phones from other manufacturers at the same price point.

Review: High quality product with a user-friendly interface -- It's one sharp phone!
by: Joseph S. Tranquillo on date: October 20, 2006
The reason why I didn't give it a 5:

I currently own a Audiovox XV6600 (a fully functional PDA with Windows Mobile 5, etc.., and activated the phone through Verizon). So you can imagine downgrading from a PDA to a run-of-the-mill / mainstream flip-phone explains why the Samsung A930 isn't the "fanciest" gadget I've come across. In other words, I'd give this Samsung a 5/5 if it wasn't for the PDA. I hope you find the following information helpful.

Ive seen and handled several types of cell phones and I'd have to say that the Samsung A930 is an excellent phone... for the price (compared to other phones of much higher value, and pooring ratings/quality). It's V-Cast compatible, and has a memory card slot for a SanDisk microSD disk which is useful if you listen to music on the way to work, school, etc..

Physical Features:
- Very well constucted; no flimsy/cheap made parts.
- All input connection ports (i.e. where you plug the charger in) have attached caps/covers to prevent any dust, etc. from building up- which can result in damaging the connection prongs, which is no good (especially if you dont have an insurance plan on the phone).
- There's no protruding antenna, (which i personally found both unhelpful and unneccessary with earlier phones) but despite this problem I've been getting excellent signal (but that may just be the area I'm in)
- The camera rotates 180 degrees (give or take) so you can face it forward, or towards yourself - and it also takes impressive pictures for being a camera phone, 1280x960 (pixels) maximum resolution. Plus it has many other camera features: flash, brightness, contrast, etc..

Software Features:
- The ringtone selection isn't very good, in my opinion. There are only a select few to choose from (You can always download ringtones off GetItNow though, if neccessary).
- The user-interface is very easy to use (I'm still getting use to mine so I've had a few mess-ups, pressing the wrong key and what not). The manual contains every bit of information you need to know on working your phone - plain and simple, with pictures and easy to follow instructions - down to every last option (which i find very helpful because some options seem to be hidden almost, and commonly manuals arn't written and put together very thuroughly - Hey, no offense all the cell-phone-manual-writers, just lettin out some steam, hah!.
- They're several pre-installed software applications built-in, unfortunately I can't list all of them because my fingers would fall off, trust me though, there are some real cool features: a calculator, a scheduler, alarm clock, and many many more.
- It includes GetItNow (for those not farmliar with GetItNow, its a application on the phone which allows you to connect to a Verizon server (Air time does not go against your contracted minutes) and you'll have access to hundreds of downloads such as ringtones, wallpapers, games, news, sports, and thats only to name a few. Its free to use, but some of the tones, wallpaper, etc.. cost a few dollars to purchase.
- Since i started a new contract I was eligable for 1 month free trial of V-Cast (Which I believe is about $15 a month) - it's pretty interesting/entertaining, you can access music videos, concerts, clips from your favorite tv shows, etc... In my opnion though i wouldn't recommend it, it's very over priced... $15 a month to watch clips of concerts and tv shows on a 1'' x 1'' screen? and how often are you going to watch a concert on your cell phone?

Phone Settings:
- There are countless adjustments and settings you can make to the phone to make it very customized, from different ringtones depending on the person who is calling you (you can even have a picture of the person display when they call, it's called Video-ID i believe)
- Voice Activated Dialing - you dont even need to had a pre-stored contact to call, you can simply say, for example "Call 5551234" and if it hears you clearly it will recognize the number and ask what you would like to do, "Call, store, etc.." (and when I was testing it I was speaking very quickly it worked dead-on the first couple times, but if it missunderstands a single (possibly 2) number(s) it will show you a list of similar numbers
- TIP: When using the voice recognition dialing, try putting on the speaker phone fuction first, I've found it can recognize speech a lot clearer (and make sure there isn't any loud ambient noise in the room (which would lead to a misrecognition)
- It's Bluetooth capabile for anyone interested.
- It also has a small input jack for headphones (i dont believe it's the standard 1/8'' jack though, any local electronics store I'm sure would carry an adaptor) so you can listen to music on the go. Also has playlist buttons are on the outside of the case to allow easier control.

Overall I'm very pleased with the phone (and you can imagine that going from a PDA to this... thats a good thing)

Don't take my word on it though, there are plenty of online reviews, and going to the store to try the phone out yourself before buying it is an awesome idea. I hope you found this review helpful.

Review: Sexy Phone with Overall Good Build Quality
by: John Kim on date: October 16, 2006
i have had this phone for over a week now, and i am very satisfied. let me tell you for the price you are getting is a steal. how can one make money by getting a new phone? i dont know but i dont really care either.

yes some of the cons include the easy to hit speaker button and also the fact it cant play mp3s. however i bought a data cable and it syncs up with windows media player 10 to do simple conversions and transfer of mp3 files to your phone. there was no problem. i just recommend you get a microsd card if you plan to do any kind of multimedia use.

the picture quality on the phone is awesome. camera, games, everything is very clear. speakerphone is clear. the external display always stays on by default turning brighter when in use. i like this rather than having to click a button to turn the external display on. a good looking phone that is perfect for the average person.

Review: Poor design
by: D. L. Anderson on date: October 9, 2006
I can hardly pick this phone up without accidentally hitting the volume or speakerphone button. The manual that comes with it uses little icons instead of written words. Besides being almost indistinguishable from one another, these icons make reading the instructions akin to reading a coded message. You really have to stop and study each icon to figure out what the hell they are talking about. From brand new, the battery needs recharging less than every 48 hours. Just doesn't seem to hold a charge worth a darn. Poor reception... really poor inside. The menu buttons seem to be strategically designed to get you to use the various V-cast and additional charges type functions. It makes it harder to use simple phone functions. I bought the case for it and it's a bust too. The way it's made, the phone won't close properly and the clear cover over the keys, makes pressing them individually almost impossible. I have nothing good to say about the design or function of this phone.

Review: Why I like the Samsung a930...
by: Deslina Bartholomew on date: October 5, 2006
I don't know why people rate this phone so bad, when it really isn't so bad. I'm writing this review for my mom since we both own the phone right now (My name is Keli speaking for mom - Deslina). We got it as a deal by just going to the Verizon store (2 phones with new contract for $100 with a $50 rebate = $50 spent for 2 of these phones). That was just the first positive option I found for this phone.

Secondly, I had an LG phone before and an older Samsung model which both had terrible reception along with many dropped calls and this phone has only dropped calls reasonably for me (going underground on the train, under thick tunnels, etc.) and it works much better than my older phones.

Thirdly, although the ringtones and music player both have to be modified, if you just look online there are MANY helpful links that instruct you how to fix this and upload it to the phone. My boyfriend only needed 30mins-1hr to figure out how to work these options. And yes, it is not advertised as an MP3 player but as a media player (.wma) so don't get upset about it. Read carefully next time.

Fourth, I love the camera. The clarity is much better than the Razr and many other phones my friends have such as the Sidekick 3, etc so don't knock it till you try it. Also you have options which many other phones don't offer since you're working with a 1.3 megapixel camera. AND is has a camcorder and by simply hitting the camera button twice you can use this option.

Fifth, the sound quality is nice and loud so I have no issues hearing it and if you complain about going through a few screens to activate the vibetonez option or just to have it vibrate, I would say don't quit your day job.

Sixth, the option of using a sd card is great. I can change the size to whatever I want which allows me to save more stuff or add things back and forth to this phone. The size to make pics fit exactly on the screen I believe is 174x183, but experiment and research if you really want to know more.

Overall, I love this phone. The only issue I had with it was the fact that I had no way to put it on hold so once in a while if i leaned on it while it was in the pouch, the music player would start up on it's own. Best thing I'd advise is to learn to not lean on it. That probably damages it overtime. Learn to use the phone or just switch it for one more difficult or older and easier to use. Also the battery life does go a bit faster than my older phones but if you're like me and actually listening to the media player or constantly talking to people, then expect it and be prepared. It does hold out pretty well however when it's close to dying so, no worries from me.

I think it was a worthwhile purchase because I spent the time to learn how to use it. I have the option to change what I want to what I WANT and I pretty much love that.

Review: Great phone
by: smokey on date: October 1, 2006
I've had this phone for about a week now and I really like it. I get great reception indoors and out; in a direct comparison with my friend's newer lg phone (vx5200 I believe) and older lg (model?) it gets better reception than both. The sound quality is great and the phone feels very solid. I have had no problem hearing through the earpiece on buses, etc. where there is a lot of background noise - this was always a problem with my previous phones.

This phone DOES display missed calls and messages on the front display; the lower half of the display disappears after about a minute to save battery life. If you hold the speakerphone button for a second, it will light up again and display missed calls and messages, so you can check for messages without having to open the phone.

In short, here are a few things I really like about the phone:

-Great reception
-Nice loud earpiece and speakerphone
-Loud ringer
-Very good sound quality
-Voice recognition works well
-Beautiful internal screen
-Feels solid
-Nice large keypad and navigation buttons
-Camera takes decent pictures and video (for a cell phone)

Here are a few things I'm not crazy about:

-Speakerphone button can be easy to inadvertly push, although I'm now
getting used to the location and press it less often
-Speakerphone echo in car (other person hears echo); only seems to occur
when talking with flip closed in car
-Ringtones aren't the greatest
-USB cable and headphones not included with phone

Overall I think it's a great phone. It's not advertised as an .mp3 player, so I don't know why people get upset when they find out you can only play .wma files. I haven't tried V-Cast or the navigation system, but I've heard other people say that they work very well on this phone. The outer display is not for everyone and may be difficult to read if your eyesight isn't the greatest, but I personally like it. This phone deserves much better than one or two stars.

Review: Buyer Beware
by: Morgan Bornstein on date: September 26, 2006
I really wish I had read Susan's review before heading to the Verizon store and upgrading to this model. Thankfully Verizon does have that 14 day trial period.

After using this phone for about a week, these are the PRO's:

- It's black and rather sleek looking without a stubby antennae

- The speakerphone is very clear sounding and the microphone has a surprisingly decent range on it

- When on vibrate the phone's flash blinks red when there's an incoming call--I thought that was pretty cool

- I guess the camera is alright. I don't know, I don't use my dippy little 1 MP phone with a "flash" as a camera. I have a decent 4 MP camera that acts only as a camera. It's not some mutant transformer.

And now for the CON's...

- The reception is pretty poor compared to my older Samsung model and my girlfriend's older LG. Now in my house where I used to have a full line of bars, I only have 2.

- The speakerphone button. Try holding the phone and carrying on a conversation without hitting it--I'll be impressed.

- Missed calls/text messages/voicemails do appear on the outside screen--for about a minute. Then there's no way to tell you're received anything without opening the phone first. Additionally the icons used seem to be different from the older generation phones (where it was a simply letter). A man emitting telepathic rays is appearently the icon now for voicemail.

- THIS IS NOT AN MP3 PLAYER! It is a WMA player. Yes, it can be hacked to play MP3s, but the hack has to be performed every time you want to play them. What's the point? For the price of the memory card for the phone you could just buy a decent mp3 player. It's not worth the hassle, headache, and extra money for their conversion kit, usb data cable, and memory card.

Also as an aside, I was told by no less than two Verizon employees that the buttons on the outside of the phone (play, back, next) would also work to "preview" text messages on the LCD screen. Well I can say now with authority they're full of it. Those buttons on the front are dedicated to the nonexistant mp3 player.

If for some reason you're still considering this phone, Costco has it in their stores at the Verizon booth. At least there they throw in the accessory kit and a lifetime warantee. Buy the phone there if you must.

Review: Only if you like pictures
by: Susan Stretch on date: September 25, 2006
This phone has great picture and video capacity as well as techincal capablities but if you are looking for reception, look somewhere else. I have had two Samsungs in the past and was very happy with them. I am very unhappy with this purchase. I am no longer able to get reception from my home and have had many more dropped calls with this model. The small screen on the front of the phone is difficult to read as it flashes the number of incomings. It does not display missed calls, voicemails etc on front of phone. You must open phone to check from mail, messages, etc.. Button on the side of the phone are difficult to manage. There is no comfortable place to put your fingers when holding the phone without hitting the speaker or volume buttons. Just picking the phone up or putting it in your pocket often turns on the speaker phone status.
